Matthew Chipping, Assistant Director
We spoke to Assistant Director Matthew Chipping about his role at the National Wealth Fund.
Tell us what attracted you to join the National Wealth Fund?
I was attracted to the National Wealth Fund's mission of enabling economic growth and tackling climate change and by the opportunity to bring my skills and experience to the organisation. Additionally, whilst I relocated from London to Leeds 5 years ago, I continued to travel extensively in my previous roles and so I was looking forward to being based permanently in Yorkshire.
What does your role involve?
My role involves working with Combined Authorities and Local Authorities across the UK and providing commercial and financial advisory support for their infrastructure, growth and net zero projects. This can include meeting with different Local Authority stakeholders, researching and providing analysis on project financing approaches, and facilitating workshops with Local Authorities. It also involves working on lending transactions where the National Wealth Fund is providing finance for a project.
What is the National Wealth Fund like to work for?
The National Wealth Fund is a brilliant place to work. I've found that everyone across the organisation is highly motivated by the National Wealth Fund's mission. At the same time, there is a great range of skills and experience in the Local Authority team and across the organisation, from Central and Local Government, Professional Services and Financial Services. This means its a great place to learn from those around you too.
What were you doing before you joined the Fund, and how has your experience helped with the role you are now doing?
Prior to joining the National Wealth Fund, I worked at PwC in the public sector management consulting team and then at Baringa in the Government team. My experience of business case development, financial analysis, project management and working in the Local Government sector have helped with my current role at the National Wealth Fund.
What are your highlights/ proudest achievements since joining the National Wealth Fund?
Since joining the National Wealth Fund, the highlight for me has been supporting our clients on some of their most significant infrastructure projects.
What are you looking forward to next at the National Wealth Fund?
Moving forward, as part of our Regional Project Accelerator programme, I am looking forward to working more closely with our clients on some of their most strategically important projects.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a role here?
If you are looking for a new challenge and think you have the right skills for the role, then I'd absolutely encourage you to apply, to find out more about what we are trying to achieve at the National Wealth Fund and find out if it could be for you.
