Fabien Bonavia, Deputy General Counsel
Deputy General Counsel Fabien Bonavia talks about working at the National Wealth Fund.
Tell us what attracted you to join the NWF?
I wanted to do something different. I had spent time in the private sector in London law firms and in-house at banks. Working at the NWF meant I would experience working in the public sector - and taking on a new role, in a new sector, new institution and new city certainly ticked all the boxes! I was also familiar with a start-up environment and felt I could bring those learnings to the new team at NWF.
What does your role involve?
As deputy general counsel, I support the institution in three ways: (a) facilitating the execution of transactions to deliver our financial commitments, (b) advising the General Counsel, Executive Committee, Board and His Majesty's Treasury on how the function manages legal risk in areas such as public law, company law, procurement or regulatory compliance; and (c) providing strategic leadership across the legal and governance functions to deliver NWF's objectives
What is the NWF like to work for?
It is a unique environment. Staff comprises a mix of individuals who are well versed in the civil service way of working, experienced and ambitious colleagues from very entrepreneurial backgrounds, economists, accountants and procurement experts. No two days are the same and every day involves thinking about a new initiative or exciting transaction.
What were you doing before you joined the Fund, and how has your experience helped with the role you are now doing?
I scaled the legal function at a London-based fintech. We grew the legal team from two when I started to 25 by the time I left and identifying what worked and what didn't in that setting helped with my role here. I qualified as a solicitor into the banking team and so spent most of my career in transactional settings advising external clients. Those learnings are definitely relevant as we are growing the legal function and building a book of investments at NWF.
What are your highlights/ proudest achievements since joining the NWF?
As a public servant and in a managerial position, my primary objective is to serve. Witnessing this first hand at a policy bank that deploys public money to reduce climate change and boost economic growth has been very rewarding. I am proud that I am able to play a part in shaping how we do this. I'm also proud to have made Leeds my home. I have learnt so much by meeting new people, seeing the opportunities that exist in the regions and understanding the challenges.
What are you looking forward to next at the NWF?
We have a fantastic legal and governance team at NWF. My colleagues make my work worthwhile. I'm looking forward to the growth in the team and welcoming new colleagues on board. As the mandate of NWF expands, I expect the culture and ambition of the organisation will continue to evolve and I'm excited to see what that looks like.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a role here?
The role here is what you make it. There are many opportunities to be involved in the transactions that are constantly increasing. If you are interested in contributing to the multiple policy initiatives, then I would say apply! We are all learning together and if you have a growth mindset and willing to challenge "how it's always been done," this could be the place for you.
